Paper 1 Question 1 - Review
A)
Dear Emmanuel Macron, President of France,I am sorry for your tragic event at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. However I must ask if you are aware of the events in the amazon. It’s a similar tragedy to your’s, the forests of the great Amazon are burning. This has been going on for 3-weeks. Before you start thinking how it’s their problem and they have to deal with it, don’t you think it’s not fair when the whole world pitched in when your country was burning?
The forests are a part of producing oxygen to our world. 20% of our oxygen comes from the great forest. Without the tree’s and other plants out there, there will come a time where there won’t be enough clean oxygen to supply the world, that includes all of France. Why try to preserve a piece of history if there will come a time where no one will be there to experience it. The Amazon first covers 5.5 million kilometers of land. That’s the size of Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern territory all combined. Sadly, 800,000 of it has been demolished because of deforestation. That’s around the same size as New South Wales! Please, Mr. President, think of your future, your country's future, our future.
-Sincerely
A student from Marco Island Academy.
B)
The news article (text A) and letter (text B) are very similar when it comes to structure, purpose, and tone. The key differences lie in audience and format. Text A was directed to a bigger audience, meaning anyone who would read it. While the letter is directed to one person. Because of this difference the writing style will also be different regarding phrasing of sentences and what is spoken about. They both were created to warn and inform about the situations about the cathedral and the amazon forest.
In the text A, the best way to catch the attention of passing eyes is to create a catchy title. Text A does it by summing up the whole article without even talking about it. They make it sound dramatic so the readers become curious. They use dramatic words and sentences like “the whole world knew in three minutes.” and ‘divided the internet.” In text B, the letter, the only use of being dramatic is to emphasize something. In this case, how severe the first fire really is. It’s not meant for the whole world to read so no use of creating a catchy title. Rather, its audience is a president for whom formal tone is used. That’s why it uses ‘Dear’ and ‘Sincerely’ in the letter, along with using the directed reader’s full name and title. In this case, it’s “President of France”.
As for the content of the two texts, they use two different points of view. Because of text A being directed at the world, its point of view is third person. This can be seen through the use of words like ‘the world’ and ‘ celebrities’. The author uses titles and groups of people as their subject. However in text B, the point of view switches from first person and second person, with the use of ‘your’, ‘you’ and ‘our’. The second person points out how the letter is directed only towards the reader as if the author was speaking to them in person. As for the first person, it’s to emphasize there are more people out in the world, including the author. They could have only references the world through third person but choose to include themselves to add even more emphasis on how it’s affecting the author as well, the reason for writing the letter in the first place.
In addition, the author emphasized the whole issue in text B, to create a tone of urgency and importance. The author wanted to get the point across on how serious the first fire really is. By comparing the size of the forest and the amount lost, it creates a picture in the reader’s head of those sizes of the named areas then adding a forest or picture of bare land in that place. As for text B, the tone is around the same however there isn’t a sense of urgency. The purpose is to only inform, therefore the tone has importance with a hint of drama. They emphasize the situation through the actions of others, billionaires, and celebrities. Billionaires and celebrities hold a higher status level so if they are involved, it makes it sound more serious and significant of an issue.
Both texts have their similarities and differences but still make an impact on the readers. In the end, that was their end goal in writing the two pieces of text and trying to inform everyone about the issue that could affect everyone’s future.

Hey Zoie,
ReplyDeleteAO1:
For AO1 I’m going to give you a total of 3 marks. You had a great dealt understanding of the text, due to the fact you used a fact from the source, ‘20% of our oxygen comes from the great forest’. This was great. However, you didn’t put a date on your letter to begin off, as that is a big key role as to the structure of how a letter works.
AO2:
For AO2 I’m to give you a total of 4 marks. I really liked how you said “without the trees..there won’t be enough clean oxygen…that includes all of France.” This has such as powerful meaning and I really liked how you implied the oxygen being a dangerous hazard to the citizens of France and what that could mean to the President himself. This can definitely go in with the audience as that is a way to purposely get them through their heads that this is important.
AO1:
For AO1 I’m going to give you a total of 4 marks. You had a detailed understanding of the text and the references were relefavnt to characteristic features. I liked how you went in depth of why this would be ‘second person’ and why this would be used in ‘first person’, but also adding quotations from part A which backed up your reasoning even more.
AO2:
For AO2 I’m going to give you a total of 3 marks. You analysis is clear and is structured neatly. You also talked about each of form, structure, and language to implend the use of why this goes there such as ‘Dear’ and “Sincerely’. I also liked how you stated to how much of a difference the text and your text differientatied such as saying “The news article and letter are very similar when it comes to structure, purpose, and tone.”
Total: 14/25
Great job.
