Flaws for All (The Crucible)

The crucible, a tragic dilemma, was full of conflicts with the characters against themselves and everyone around them. Majority of characters had a sin that kept the issue at hand from being resolved. These sins include pride, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, sloth, and greed. All of these are flaws and sins each character holds. Flaws are imperfections and impurities that everyone has. These range more than just the seven deadly sins that were mentioned before.

The list of who has the most flaws varies from person to person. As for me, the person who was most flawed was none other than Abigail Williams. She was the root to most of the problems and the many problems of this tragedy. Throughout the place there are many cases of lust, pride, wrath, stubbornness, and immaturity. The first act was lust. John Proctor was dissatisfied with his marriage and took advantage of Abigail. Later on he says that he realized mistakes and will never let it happen again. Abigail is not satisfied with this and wants John for herself. This act was fueled by lust.

Abigail, now beginning to anger - she can’t believe it: I have something better than hope, I think!

Proctor: Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be coming for you anymore.

After she couldn’t have him she acted out of control due to wrath and pride. She cherished her pride more than the situation’s outcome and continued to call ‘witch’ (along with the other girls). She didn’t want to dirty her name and be seen as a liar so she continued to say others were lying. This continued all the way to the court.

Her immaturity and stubbornness is what kept this issue alive. There have been many times that she could have confessed, however she was so stubborn on keeping her name good rather than fixing the issue that led to several people’s deaths.

Putnum is the second on the list of flawed. He saw this issue of witchery as an advantage. He is already the richest in the village, however when it had reached the court he had his own daughter call witch on his neighbor so he could have that land. This is greed. Always wanting more and more even when you are already at the top.

Giles: My proof is there! Pointing to the paper. If Jacobs hangs for a witch he

forfeit up his property - thatNs law! And there is none but Putnam with the; coin

to buy such a great piece. This man is killing his neighbors for their land!

Along with the majority of the village, Putnum keeps his name clean and says it’s a lie. Cory ends up being accused and Putnum doesn’t get Cory’s land due to Cory being crushed to death by rocks. Putnum’s pride keeps him safe while the others suffer.

Third in line is Parris, Abigail's Uncle. A lot of the time he is seen in the court by Danforth’s side accusing others. They would try to prove they are innocent and he could quickly say something against them. His main flaw is pride. His pride is one of the worst. He knows the truth about this situation and all it was, was careless, innocent dancing. At least that’s what he thinks. It’s not till the end when he finally begins to feel guilt and asks Proctor to lie so his life will be spared.

Danforth: Ah? And the other girls? Susanna Walcott, and - the others? They are

also pretending?

Mary Warren: Aye, sir.

Danforth, wide-eyed: Indeed. Pause. He is baffled by this. He turns to study

ProctorLs face.

Parris, in a sweat: Excellency, you surely cannot think to let so vile a lie be

spread in open court!

Danforth: Indeed not, but it strike hard upon me that she will dare come here

with such a tale…

In this case Mary is trying to tell the truth and Parris knows it but is calling it a lie anyways.

For the last four they all share Pride as their main flaw, it goes Proctor, Danforth, Hale, and Mary. As for proctor he had some lust but learns from it and pushes Abigail away, the maiden that he sexually interacted with even though he had a wife. Hale’s Pride was to show off his knowledge in the beginning and that he knew everything. Danforth’s and Mary’s pride was in their power. Danforth was the judge of the court and Mary became an official of the court and after gaining power stood up to proctor and acted like she had power over him.

All characters had at least a flaw or sin to them and all of them interacting was the fuel to this tragedy and what gave it the end it did.
